You Deserve Wealth

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

Side Hustle Series – Rent out your space

We live in an age where people accumulate stuff and refuse to let it go. That is why there are so many storage rental places popping up all over the place. Depending on the size the space the rental fee can range from $25 to $125 a month to store all the, ummmm, stuff that can’t fit in the house. Sometime though, people, other single moms, students, or people in transit need a temporary place to store their goods. T

I'm Thankful

Living the single mom life has it's advantages and disadvantages. Parenting solo can be a double-edge sword of both joyful indepedence and exhaustion. I am one of the joyful independent ones (though it can get exhausting) so I want to take a minute to express my thanks.

  • I am thankful for my two beautiful children. They are a very bright spot in my life.

  • I am thankful for the love of family and friends.

  • I am thankful for the ability to reach for my goals and see my dreams come true everyday.

  • I 'm thankful for a God who loves me and makes sure that I have everything I need.

  • I am thankful for life experiences because they've made me the person I am today.

  • I am thankful for love.

What are you thankful for?

Side Hustle Series – Deliver Newspapers

As hard as it is to believe, there are people who still subscribe to the local newspaper. The internet has taken quite a few former newspaper readers online, but there are some who are die-hard real newspaper fans. They expect their newspaper at their door step every morning like clock work. The postal service is not in the business of delivering papers so somebody has to do it so why not you.

Delivering newspapers is a great way to earn extra money on the side while working your regular job. Most of the time newspapers are delivered early in the morning, usually before sunrise between the hours of 4am-6am. Those early hours are great because you are making money early and easily.

This is one job that you can take your kids on. You can put them in your car and let them sleep while you drive. Take a small snack, a pillow, and blankets and do your rounds. You will fall into a great routine over time so your mornings will go buy effortlessly. Since you are already up you won’t have to struggle to get ready for work.

There is a downside to delivering newspapers though as with all things. You may encounter late delivery at your pick up station which will make you late delivering. Some customers may blame you for that. You have to pay for the wear and tear on your car and pay for your own gas.

The popularity of newspapers is going down because of Internet access to the news. So this may limit the number of newspaper delivery jobs right now. There are other types of delivery that can be done such as phonebook, community newspapers, free newspapers, and free magazine delivery to storefronts and other public gathering places.

Wally-World Wrangle: Lessons in Parenting from a Single Mom's Perspective

Children that throw temper tantrums in the store really cannot be blamed. It’s the parent’s fault for letting it get that far. If you know your child is spoiled and you can’t say “No”, why do you bring them to the store?

The other day at Wally-world I saw a kid acting utterly crazy. I mean this girl was at least four or five years old (okay maybe she was a big 3, it doesn’t matter) and was kickin’ and screamin’ in the deli section. Her mother was trying to pick her up off the floor and get her to be quiet. This little girl was getting louder and louder. My no-nonsense mommy radar went up and I was ready to go over there and handle the situation myself. “Ma’am, I’ll handle this since obviously you can’t”, I would have said.

My Back to College Experience in a Nutshell

My back to school journey went something like this…

The college I chose had an adult degree program that could be completed in 18 months. I had college credit already, in fact I had an Associate’s degree in Architectural Studies (I had dreams of being and Architect). Even though I had college credit I was missing a few core courses but I could take them with my other classes.

My major was Organizational Management (a fancy name for Business Management). I worked in corporate America for several years and I had business course credit so I felt that I would do well. One of the basic classes that I had to attend to meet my core requirements was American Literature. The professor was so wonderful and made the subject so interesting that I decided to change my major to English. The professor wasn’t the only deciding factor;

Single Mom's Guide to Going Back to School: How to Navigate the Process

Part of the wealth building process may include getting more education. More education usually means more money earned in the long term. A college graduate earns more than a high school graduate. The higher the degree level the more money you can make.

So what can an adult going back to school expect? What are the costs? Can you get your mind in study mode? What should you study? These are all valid questions that can be answered with the help of a college advisor or someone who has been down that path.

The first step through this process is to decide what you want to be when you grow up. What has always been your passion? What are your interests? What have you always dreamed of becoming? The answers to these questions will give you the first clues to deciding on a major and minor. From there you can evaluate the college websites that are in your neighborhood or online. With many college programs going virtual you don’t have to worry about leaving your home to get the education you need. This fits in well with the responsibilities that single moms have.

A Tale of Two Kids and One Crazy Mommy!

AJ, my, darling son, almost lost his "son" privileges this morning. He was fussing about having to wipe up some juice. He didn’t spill it (I think I did accidentally) and he shouldn’t have to get it up. He was the one who discovered it.

I told him to get it up because we all live here and have to help out. He got made and said he didn't want to live here (at my house) any more. I told him that was fine and that he should find someone to go home with today because I wouldn't be picking him up (hehe).

He looked a bit confused and nervous then he went to get some juice. I made him put it back because since he was no longer living here he couldn't have any of my food. This was upsetting for him.

Side Hustle Series - Bake Up Some Profits

With the holiday season ramping it now is the time to use your baking skills to earn some extra Christmas money. If you make exceptional cakes, cookies, and/or pies you are one of the few people that will be in demand. Not everyone can bake and the thousands of people around you with a sweet tooth will beat down your door once they find out that you can bake.

How do you get started? Make some samples and place them in the employee, teacher, or nurses’ lounge. Put your baked goods where people gather and leave a note letting people know how to get more. You could give out samples as an early holiday gift, sort of a holiday kickoff things. Attach your business card (make some up), brochure, or mini-flier to the package.

You will have to come up with a system to take orders and deliver your product. Another option is to bake up a batch of cookies, brownies, or other easy to bake and take item and sell them from you office desk or locker.

If you are daring place a classified ad on Craigslist.org, Backpage.com, or Kijiji.com. You can also sell your goodies (the baked ones) on eBay. They have a classified ad option for $10 that will remain on the site and searchable for 30 days. That's not a bad value at all!

So there you have it. Another side hustle idea that you can run away with. Tweak it and make it yours. Let me know how it works out for you.

Single Mom's Guide to Free (Low-cost) Food

During this time of year in the US most people focus on the holidays and eating. Everything is very festive and the spirit of giving is at an all time high. Unfortunately there are many who do not have the extra money to have a nice spread of food. Fortunately there are organizations that help ease the burden by providing free or low-cost food baskets to those in need.

Food Pantries Blog - this website lists food banks across America. It is updated manually so be sure to check back often. The food banks are listed by state and cities. You will likely find something near you.

Single Mom's Guide to Bargain Christmas Gifts

I went to Target yesterday to browse. I really like the store and may become a convert if things over at Wally-World gets too crazy. But that’s another article.

Anyway their $1 section is so tempting. The cute little things they have make me what to buy one of each. It’s too easy to spend $50 in that one part of the store. Right now they have there holiday items out. I figure that I can get all the kids in my family two or more gifts easily.

My daughter loves dogs (she’s playing with the idea of being a Vet) and they have so many cute puppy items. There were calendars, pens, pencils, magnets, and notepads. I was tempted to get all of them for her (I love giving gifts) but I have to remember that Christmas will be here soon so I need to just wait.

I did get her a calendar (she was thrilled) and bought a pack of six magnets with pictures of adorable puppies on them. The will be her dogs until we get a real one in the future. I also got my son a couple of $1 books because he is getting into the reading thing.

What did I get for myself? A bra... I know not very exciting but I can never have too many. So I’ll be going back to Target next week to stock up on Christmas gifts for the kids in my life.

With Christmas just around the corner now is the time to get out and get those gifts (while the supply is still good). Of course there is always Black Friday, but if you are like me and hate crowds do your shopping now.

There are other places to get low cost gifts (they will never know it cost $1). Run on over to your local Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Family Dollar and any other "dollar" store. Most kids are more concerned about quantity versus quality so don't be so concerned about buying those overly priced toys (that they will break the same day). Spend that money on several small gifts and watch them scream with glee because they got so much.

Happy Shopping!

Single Mom's Guide to Free Online Reading

I am a big reader so I am always on the look out for a good book. Lately though I haven’t had much time to sit down and read but I am thrilled when I find a new book source, especially if it’s free. There are a few online resources for free books. You have to read them online but it’s free so all the better.

Project Gutenberg – If you haven’t been to this website you are missing out on a lot of great literature. They list other books as well, but if your child has to do a report on a literary figure or classic book this is the place to go. All of the books listed are in the public domain and are free to download. If you are an enterprising person you could even re-publish a few of your favorites, add a foreword, and include relevant resources. Rebecca over at Certain Way did this with The Science of Getting Rich. She gives the book away but offers other products that tie into the purpose of the book. Okay I am getting off on a tangent.

Here are a couple more places online to read books for free.

Daily Lit – This website offers free books to members (it’s free to join). You select the book you want to read and they send you a chapter a day to your email. So you get a chapter in your inbox each day. They also have more recent books for a price. You may find something you like well enough to order but the free books are just fine.

Here is an article that list 23 more places to read books online for free. Happy reading!

Tuesday Toot

I'm doing a Tuesday Toot. It's kind of late, at the end of a very long day in fact, but I wanted to participate. I've updated my blog and added a few new features. Feel free to look around and come back often.

I want it to be an interactive kind of place so I have a poll you can participate in on the side bar. I'll put a new one up every week.

I have four new Single Mom Success Guides coming out. They are packed with helpful information for single moms (and anyone really) who want to thrive in life and not just survive.

Sign up for updates and special offers that only mailing list subscribers can take advantage of. I will be having contest, giveaways, and exclusive offers every month.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you have had a terrific Tuesday that was worth tooting about. I sure did!

The Cash-Strapped Parent's Guide to Christmas: How to Have a Merry Christmas For Free

I walked into Wal-Mart this weekend and was met with Christmas displays and trees. As I walked down the aisles I heard the Christmas music playing softly in the background. I admit that I was a little agitated that Thanksgiving has been completely ignored or at best got one day of attention (probably on the day nobody really went shopping).

I got over the agitation and proceeded with my shopping. But it was not without thinking about the thousands of single moms out there who feel burdened by the Christmas holidays.

I’ve faced this dread myself in years past. I know what it’s like to wonder where I’ll get the money to buy gifts for my kids. Several times I’ve made the decision to only purchase one gift or no more than three (in the spirit of Christ’s birth). As much as I wanted to give my precious little ones everything they wanted I just couldn’t. I didn’t have the money because I needed to pay the rent or car note. I needed to make sure there was food in the house for the days after Christmas.

There are so many moms like me out there who need a helping hand this year. So I’ve done some research and came up with a pretty long list of resources. These are organizations that help needy families during the Christmas holidays. They give toys and sometimes clothes to families that need a helping hand during this time of year.

Most of the organizations have local chapters so you will have to contact the one nearest you for more information. Please don’t be shy about calling. They are there to help and often are looking for people to help. The more localized the better for you. Also remember to get a head start on applying for help. Some deadlines have already passed but try anyway. Your persistence will pay off.

Toys for Tots – this organization has many local chapters. Their deadline in some places was in October but they are still taking applications. If they have toys left you will be contacted.

Angel Tree – This program is for kids who have parents in prison.
Salvation Army – Contact your local chapter for information about their program. They don’t collect money in those little red pails for nothing. You just may be one of the families they help this year.

Shiners/Lions/Masons – These organizations are famous for the help they give to children. Call your local office and find out when and where they are taking applications.
St. Vincent de Paul/Catholic Charities – These Catholic organizations help people year around. They have offices in many locations so call and find out where you can go for help.

VFW/American Legion – Your local organization may have a Christmas toy donation program. Be sure to call and find out.

County Help Lines – Your county help line may have information about other local organizations that are helping the needy this Christmas. To find your state or county helpline, Google “[your state] + helpline”. It may show up as a crisis hotline but they may also have information that you can use.

Local Churches – There are likely churches in your area that are collecting toys to give to needy families. Open the phone book and call the churches near you and ask if they have a program. Find out how to get on the list.

Local Businesses – I worked for a large corporation that collected toys every year for needy families. They may work in cooperation with other charitable organizations but many may offer direct help. Look in the newspaper for announcements and call a few to learn about which companies are helping the needy. Also ask your friends if they their companies have programs.

Libraries/Banks – The local library and banks often have Angel or Giving Trees. Ask how you can get your kids’ names on the tree to receive Christmas gifts this year.

United Way – this organization is the umbrella unit of hundreds of charitable organizations. Call your local office and find out what programs they have to help kids for Christmas. I’m sure they can point you in the right direction.

There are likely many more resources out there you just have to investigate the options. Please do not be put off by the word “needy”. It is not an indication of you as a person but a temporary status. We are living in tough economic times right now so everyone is struggling. Fortunately you now have a few resources now to help give your kids a great Christmas.

Thank You President-Elect Obama (An Open Letter from a Single Mom)

Dear President-Elect Barack Obama,

My heart is singing right now because now my 8 year old son has the chance to become the President of the United States of America one day. If not the president of the USA, perhaps the president of a corporation or the president of his own company.

My son is a struggling second grader at Manning Oaks Elementary. He is a little black boy who seems to have so many odds stacked against him. I am a single mother and like your mother I want the best for my son.

I want to see him rise up and become a great man. I showed him your picture today and he saw clips of you on the news. I told him that your name is Barak Obama and that you are our new President. He asked me if he could do that too and I proudly and honestly told him Yes! Yes he can grow up and become president because today we have seen that in America it is possible for a black man to be elected by the people, for the people.

I am thankful to you Mr. Obama for being courageous enough to share your story. Thank you for never giving up amidst all the mudslinging and hateful rhetoric. Your eloquence and intelligence, your firm commitment to rise above the fray has inspired me to teach my son to do the same. I may have to struggle day after day to motivate my son to get his lessons just like your mother did for you. I may have to cry many days and nights because I am exhausted, but I will. I have a dream though, a vision of greatness for my son just like I am sure your mother had for you.

You have made your mother proud and have proven that the sons of single moms do not all grow up to be thugs and drug dealers. They don’t have to be behind bars but, like you, they can pass the bar and go on to teach others how to do the same. The son of a single mother can become the President of the United States of America. A little black boy with wide-eyed dreams, and who now wants me to buy him books, can be whatever he wants to be.

So thank you again Mr. Obama—President-Elect Obama for standing strong. For listening to your mother and for being the change you wanted to see in the world. You have inspired me, you have inspired the world and we stand behind you to re-build America so that my son can have a better future!

Did You Vote? Your Lone Voice Counts!

Today is one of the most important days in history. Are you a part of that history? Did you get out and vote? If you are reading this post and it's still Tuesday, November 4, 2008, then you probably still have time to get out and vote. Women have fought for the right to have equal pay for equal work, the right to work, and numerous other rights. The right to vote is monumental in our lives.

Come with Me to the Carnival (Blog Carnival that is)

Women have fought for the right to have equal pay for equal work, the right to work, and numerous other rights. The right to vote is monumental in our lives. Sometimes it seems like the choices we are a choice between the lesser of two evils. It seems discouraging but I urge you to look deep within your heart and look deep within the eyes of your children and do what is right for the both of you.

As a woman and mother you are the most powerful person in the lives of your children. They depend on you to be a good example. I'm sure that if they are in school they are hearing about the election and may be asking questions. Some may have had mock elections in their schools and proudly exercised their right to vote. My daughter asked me if I voted and a smile and nod of approval crossed her face when I told her that I did.

Being a part of the democratic process is a wonderful feeling. Your vote counts and it will make all the difference in your little world. Your kids will be proud!
