How My Journey to Financial Freedom Began

A few years back I was sitting in my 2-bedroom apartment unemployed. I was not doing too badly, but I could do a lot better. I was on Section 8 housing, getting food stamps (now called SNAP), and broke. This was shortly after my daughter was born and I had quit my courthouse clerk job. Fortunately her father made sure the child support was on time so I at least had something coming in.

I sat at the table and thought about where I wanted to be in a year, in five years.

This weekend I got to try out Good Humor’s new Chocolate Éclair ice cream bars. I’ve honestly never had any of their ice cream, but if I want a decadent treat this is the brand and flavor I would pick up. Sometime you just have to treat yourself, right?

I picked up a box of six at Target on Friday afternoon, did more shopping, and finally made my way home. By this time the ice cream was starting to melt so I put it in the freezer for later. A couple hours later I decided to sample one. My daughter Lexi took one too and though it was still a little soft it was delicious. It doesn’t help that we are both chocolate freaks. Lexi liked it so much, she got another one, but I wanted to wait until they were completely frozen

I didn't get another bar until Sunday. By then it was hard enough to satisfy me. Lexi had her third one by then. She told me when it is completely frozen it tastes even better. The outer coating is crunchier too. I agree with her on this. The center was cake-like and outside of that was a fluffy texture.

Overall we really enjoyed the Good Humor Chocolate Éclair bars. I’d say it was a bit rich for weekly consumption but it is definitely a wonderful, occasional treat.

[Book Reivew] Unexpected Treasures

I've been reading a new book. It's called Unexpected Treasures: 72 Ways to Uncover Your Hidden Wealth by Dr. Mikal Brown. The basic idea of the book is to encourage the reader to reach for more financially. The chapters are short and sweet, but it's filled with the obvious wisdom from the man who wrote it. His tone is very kind and engaging and make you want to read on.

Financial Advice from Edward Jones?

Over the last few months I have been pondering what I should do with my retirement fund. I have a nice little nest egg in it and it's performing at a mediocre rate. But I'm not completely satisfied. I want to see a higher return on the investment.

The trouble is I am almost clueless about how to shift things around. So I keep looking at the amount in the fund go up and down as the market goes up and down. And I keep wondering how to wrap my head around all this investment stuff.
